118 entrants played in the 29th Annual Southeastern Championships at Midtown Athletic Club over the Feb. 18-20 weekend. Sponsored by Grant Thornton (Andre Schnabl) and Merrill Lynch (Keith Clemens), the tourney remains the longest-running event in the southeast, and one of the longest-running in the country.
A splendid time was had by all, but particularly by Eben Hardie, who had played in the finals of the first Southeasterns in 1982 and made it to the finals of the 5.0s in this event as well, before losing in four to Charlotte's itinerant Canadian ace, Geoff Roper.
